How many is 'some' ?

We supply Cyclades terminal servers, which are dedicated to doing this
task. They work very well, and do just what you want.
Telnet to various addresses and you get the serial console.
(AFAIK they run Linux anyway)

If you want to use a Linux box for the task, get a Cyclades
multi-port serial card.
