Actually with the aforementioned behaviour of IDE drives this may not be
true!

journalling absolutely requires that the drive is truthful and honest. I
suspect 'simpler' filesystems are more forgiving if only half the cache
is flushed to disk, and in a random order. You'll trash a few files,
rather than render most of the journal useless.

That is, however, just an intuition...
