IANAL (and you really ought to get one because believing random idiots 
on mailing lists about legal stuff is dumb).

First, he'd have to establish that £10 is not a "small copying fee". 
That's tricky to begin with.

Then, AIUI, his damages are basically the loss of earnings incurred 
because of the user group's infringements of his rights under copyright 
law.   This is probably pretty negligible from the sound of it.

The onus is on him to take you to court.  The court sets the damages 
after hearing evidence and arguments from both sides.  The most 
significant part of any of this is going to be legal fees.
