A 486 is getting into the too-much-effort-to-bother range.  Unless you
intend to use it as a firewall or some other specialised activity, I
wouldn't bother.  It's certainly not going to be capable of a
reasonable GUI.

Compaq hardware of this era, even more so.

Try and get hold of something around P90 class and you'll have more
luck.  The more RAM the better, but you need at least 64 megs to get
even a basic GUI.
