The binary format isn't so strange - it's a bsddb.  You can also use a 
new format "fsfs" that sounds rather better - but that's binary too, and 
potentially more strange:

I was initially concerned about the opacity of the repository, since 
obviously it takes time to trust software - but I've been using svn 
heavily for a year now and it's given me very little trouble.
