It isn't always clumsy to pull email from an ISP. I use the ODMR (rfc2645)
protocol (with fetchmail and gradwell.net) which only requires an outgoing
connection which, upon authentication, is reversed so that SMTP is used to
feed mails back down the same connection.
I do have a static IP although it isn't necessary for this; the benefits are
not having port 25 open and coping with any non-availability of my server.
