Hello Gil,

   Sorry, I have not tried any NetGear ADSL modem, but I do not know of any
reason why there would be a problem using a DG834. You may find information
at http://www.adslguide.org.uk while Google is a good place to look for
opinions and information about specific problems, although you are more
likely to hit trouble if you ask here which Linux distribution you should
try first, (I use Debian).
