This suggestion might not go down so well, but here goes anyway.
To my own amazement, I recently recommended Dell for a laptop for friend
who wanted a new computer, that "works with broadband".
They have a very apple-esque config-your-own website, and the prices are
pretty reasonable. It's a one stop shop and people find having heard of
Dell reassuring.
Like the person you describe, she was a little cautious of switching to
a mac, and though I did recommend it, she preferred to opt for windows.
Worked for me - very happy friend, and the machine isn't bad for what
she paid.
And so far, I haven't had to do any tech support...
My old flatmate runs a Dell because it's the only 15" machine he could
find that does 1600x1200 (note: 15", no larger) and to this day that's
hard to beat. Since then I've paid a bit more attention to dell
hardware - laptops seem ok.
Sarah.
