I suspect you need to purge lilo, rather than just uninstall it.  If 
lilo isn't present and grub is it runs upgrade-grub automagically.

On newer systems, grub seems preferable to lilo for pretty much 
everything.  I just wish it had a sane way of specifying devices :(
