Sure, _you_ don't need all those packages but someone, somewhere needs 
the ones you don't.

Moreover every single one of those packages has been shown to work, 
across multiple achitectures.  Moreover each one conforms to an agreed 
install, configuration and removal standard.  Moreoever each one has a 
trackable bug and issue reporting system.
