I would say there is a conspicuous lack of specialised professional
associations to promote and protect the interests of skilled IT workers.
There doesn't seem to be anybody offering what unions and professional
associations like the BMA or Law Society offer to their members. A
professional association would, I think, be more likely to gain support
from geeks than a Trade Union, though I would find it amusing to see how
it might react if IT companies ever tried imposing genuine professional
work practices.

You couldn't do everything at once but I don't think it's impossible. A
lot depends on the size of your current membership. What is that,
roughly?
