[Gllug] [OT] Non-compete clauses in employment contracts

Hey folks.
I have a non-compete clause in my contract that specifically mentions
the company's clients. Purely theoretically, how much value can you
place on these clauses in contracts, in an IANAL context?
I ask because in Australia I've been in a few places where companies
have tried to enforce such a contract and the courts have ruled the
clauses invalid. The key distinction being that if you're a specialist,
you can't be expected to become a bin man for six months before
continuing your career in your chosen field. I suspect there might be
some fairly strict limitations on that argument though, and you would
need to truly have few other options available...
Thoughts?
