[Gllug] Samba over a VPN

Me again. More flakiness! 

This time it's a VPN link that stops from time to time. Is there a way
to get Samba to deal with this? At the moment, if the link goes down,
Samba complains of a disconnected endpoint, but the clients just hang. 

Wouldn't it be better if I could make Samba turn round and say the file
wasn't found (and any ideas how?)
