But generally I do. If I need new hardware, then I tend to research
online and find out exactly what I want before I buy it.

Oh indeed. I've taken advantage of the same brainless moron effect when
they've priced up a router as a network card. The cashier just scans the
barcode nad asks for the price the till tells them...
