[Gllug] hdparm -Y trashed my HDD ...

Just a word of caution.

Last night I was running a backup of one hard disk (/dev/hda). Since
the other disk on the same bus (/dev/hdb) was spinning and I wanted to
force it to sleep (so I could go to bed with less of a racket going
on) I did:

  /sbin/hdparm -Y /dev/hdb

Somehow this managed to totally trash /dev/_hda_ into a state where
e2fsck won't even begin to attempt recovery. And I was in the middle
of a backup ...

Rich.
