Many of the BBC staff were recruited with a wealth of previous experience
in either stage, film, journalism, or the military. Others learned their
trades and professions by starting at the beginning, gaining experience all
the way. They were more likely to be able to judge what might be a success,
what might be worth an experiment, without a prior need for audience
figures. The BBC gained and tried hard to maintain an excellent reputation.
Some commercial competitors are really interested in high audience
figures at the lowest possible cost, and less bothered about quality.
Unfortunately too many politicians are upset by what the spotlight might
reveal in quiet corners, and have actively tried to gag or dismantle the
BBC, using any argument possible.
