My assembler stuff was done yonks ago on a Texas Instruments 990 - 16 bit.
>From memory only about 16 registers of which 10 or so were usable - but they
were general purpose so no problems with which one was used for what.
Quite simple to program.
Amongst other things that caused the architectures demise I imagine was its
use of in-memory registers.  Fast context-switching but slow register access
and (in its early incarnation) no specific stack-manipulation instructions.
