Given this link, it appears that you are dealing with genealogical
information.  From a quick browse on freshmeat, it appears that GEDCOM
is the de facto standard file format for such data.

If you can go back to the person who provided you with the file and
get them to export the data to GEDCOM, you'll be able to load it into
a number of Linux-based packages.
