Another is that it can push things in directions that the commercial
market might not, yet might be worthwhile.

For instance, digital "over the air" transmission which blatantly
didn't work as a commercial venture.

Which, vaugely trying to get this back OT, might be something you
could say OS does also.

I for one, believe that the BBC should be spending a lot more
time/money/effort in the open source / rights free media landscape :
basically applying the same effects it has already had on tv/radio to
the digital landscape.

For instance, by having a search engine that is ad free and a little
more uk focused (albeit largely, but not entirely a re-badged version
of a major non google search company) one might argue that it helps to
fight the corner for an impartial, uk relevent search service.

You could counter that these already exist, but then if you kill of
the BBC tv stations, you might see the market devolve in the ways
previously mentioned.  Hence keeping it around, in as cost efficient
way as possible, kinda works as a safety net

or something....
