On the whole the Debian approach works well for servers, which are
probably the only place one actually wants to run the stable release.
Even there though, there are some packages where one wants newer
versions than those in the archive - I keep several locally built
packages (or packages from backports.org) on my servers. There is some
recognition of this problem in the Debian camp these days - see
http://volatile.debian.net/ for details.
