I have changed the Microfilter and the problem seems to have gone away. 
  The phone seems slightly noisy when you pick it up and listen to the 
dial tone, haven't tried a call yet.

I will have to see how it goes, the last microfilter I had was fine for 
ages and the problem only started to manifest itself gradually, so I 
suppose the problem could come back.
