I would like to propose Knoppix because of it's KDE desktop, great 
versatility and user base.

If you favour the Gnome desktop then maybe Gnoppix could be worth 
looking at as an alternative to Ubuntu.
It is based on Debian stable whereas Knoppix is based on testing/unstable.

shows relatively little user base compared to Knoppix equivalent though.
Kubuntu may also be one to watch for the future.
