I noticed something similar with an old wireless card which did nothing
at all, made no impression on the system as far as I could see and then
just worked as soon as I installed a PCI wireless driver kernel module. 

Can't remember which module but it was confusing - quite neat, too -
that it was PCI and not PCMCIA.
