Thanks for the Novatech suggestion. It may well be what I need - I had noticed
that their fully built systems are fairly cheap and wondered whether I would
be able to cannibalize one. The barebones approach would be preferable.
What I'll probably do is negotiate with one or two people who have offered to
do it, and if the price for the job is too high then I'll think harder about
the Novatech idea.
My biggest fear starting from scratch would be getting the right combination
of motherboard, PSU, cards etc. and they clearly provide you with most of
that sorted out to start with.
But my experience with installing things in the PC discourages me from doing
it myself unless I absolutely have to.
