I'd already looked at that. It reads:
# setup fink related paths. we assume that the fink directories exists.
if [ -z "$PATH" ]; then
PATH=/sw/bin:/sw/sbin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin
else
prepend_path PATH /sw/bin:/sw/sbin
fi
export PATH

Gnome-terminal

... which now reads:
# System-wide .profile for sh(1)
PATH="/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/sw/bin"
export PATH
[ -r /etc/bashrc ] && source /etc/bashrc
but, even after a re-boot, still didn't fix the problem.
But maybe I'm just tired this evening ... I'll get back to it in the
morning when I'm fresh. Thanks for the advice.
