Indeed. "Marooned in realtime" is from 1986, while his singularity paper
didn't appear until 1993.

Vinge is one of my favourite authors of all time. I haven't yet read any
of his work that I didn't like, and can highly recommend him to anyone
even remotely interested in SF.
