Unnecessary, too - you can use ps2ps.

The only glitch is that (on Ubuntu at least) ps2ps is a more primitive
script that ps2pdf, and doesn't accept stdin. However, if you compare
the two you'll have no difficulty adapting ps2ps to do what you want.
