The London Java group are very friendly (if you can put up with the 
rather noisy venue).  Next meeting is on Tuesday.
However their mailing list seems to be mainly limited announcements 
rather than questions/chat.

I have tried using the forums at
http://saloon.javaranch.com
Personally I prefer mailing lists to forums but other peoples views differ.
