I recommend gnomemud (formerly AMCL) and elephant MUD - connect to
elephant.org port 23!

They have an advice channel, guide players that help newbies, a
medieval type environment and a good balance between the available
races and classes.

It's London/UK based and there's a mud meet happening at a central pub
in November :)
