[Gllug] Centos 4 Desktop Problem

Greetings chums,

Normally I don't bother with any of the desktop stuff, as I just use
ratpoison and a bunch of xterms, but I decided to group install all
the desktop stuff for a change.

X.org was already installed, so I just did:

# yum groupinstall "GNOME Desktop Environment"

I then changed default runlevel to 5, and rebooted. I get gdm, and
can log in as root, and get the desktop environment.

If I try to log in as sanelson, I just get a blue background and a
mouse pointer - it almost looks like just metacity is running.

An inspection of the processes shows:

2696 2912 2912 2696 ? -1 S 0 0:00 \_
/usr/bin/gdm-binary -nodaemon
 2912 2918 2918 2696 ? -1 S 0 0:44 \_
/usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7
 2912 7532 7532 7532 ? -1 Ss 502 0:00 \_
/usr/bin/gnome-session

I tried adding a new user from the command line, and restarting, but I
get the same with the new user.

X logs don't show anything significant... any ideas?

System is:

Gnome 2.8.0
X Window System Version 6.8.2
CentOS release 4.3 (Final)
