Some drivers may have more poor/no SMP support - so it is worth trying. For 
example the default broadcom network drivers don't work very well and 
running in SMP mode seems to make them even more unstable. Usually though 
you just get a kernel panic though.

Might also be worth disconnecting all non-essential things and running 
memtest86 on it for an hour or so.
