Thanks for the reply.
The problem is that my local network, called localdomain, is hiding
behind both an ADSL modem running NAT and a firewall running masquerading,
and the "helo" in outgoing headers does not show my official internet domain
name. I have normally used my old RiscPC for all my emails, and it will
happily enter anything I wish as a "helo" response, but I am trying to route
all local emails via my local Debian mailserver. I can get the mailserver to
forward emails with a mostly correct header, but it fails with the "helo"
response.
I feel that I should be able to correct it by using a rewriting rule, or
failing that reconfigure the complete local mailserver to get it right, but
do it in a way that avoids a total reconfigure of the whole network. If I
have to resort to a backup internet connection, it would have a different
email address, and I would not want to reconfigure a whole network just to
correct the "helo" response from a mailserver.
I have a local BIND 9 DNS server which is not visible outside my network,
so I can configure it as I please, but I prefer to find and use a correct
method where possible.
I am aware that I could obtain an independant domain name, but I have had
the same one for so long via demon that it is well known to so many old
relatives, friends, and aquaintances, who are difficult to contact. It seems
like overkill to maintain two domain names, new and old.
