Does not sound like Format will help you, Try fdisk, or something like
Partition Magic, Even the XP boot disk would do... But Yes the Gentoo
disk would be your best bet given this is a Linux list. Maybe Knoppix,
Ubuntu, Fedora so I don't get into trouble for being bias...
