One option is to use Amanda.  It can test a tape to see what the
capacity is and then if you save those figures it can do a good estimate
of how much tape is left.  The user community has also built up a large
database of the characteristics of different brands and many of these
are bundled with the application.

You also gain smart incremental backups.
