I have to say that I have found DAT tapes to be pretty reliable.
We generally verify the tape against the disc files after backing up and have
not found discrepancies between the tape contents and the source disc.
DAT drives ARE expensive compared with CD/DVD burners, but in my view more
reliable.
If you backup to CD/DVD I reckon its absolutely vital you verify the backup,
as the media can be of variable quality. CDs are generally less likely to
fail than DVDs as the data-density is far less. I have a batch of DVDs
which write 'perfectly' but regularly fail to read the odd sector about 3-odd
Gig into the media. The discs look fine, but the coating is presumably 'iffy' !
DVDs and CDs rely very heavily on interleaved reed-solomon error-correction
for their data integrity and I certainly would not feel happy with using DVDs,
with their very high density, as a secure backup medium.
