Erm Solstice, or whatever we call it this week, has handled this sort
of thing with ease since at least Solaris 7.  That, what, nearly 7
years ago?

Again - not that I think Linux isn't good or that Solaris is
especially wonderful, but really a lot of these supposedly missing
features or neat things that have 'recently' become useable/stable in
Linux have been in Solaris for a jolly long time.
