[Gllug] Advice needed on Ubuntu

Hi,

I'm a long time user of KDE in SuSE 8.2.

The enthusiasm of GLLUG members about Ubuntu, combined with my wish to
get a bit more up-to-date, lead me to install Ubuntu v5.04 and I'm very
glad I did. I now agree it's the best thing since sliced bread. I'm very
happy with the usability of Gnome.

However, I'd like to get user access to my "local" partition but can't
because root owns it and won't allow me.

I tried following the method used in KUbuntu - trying to log in as root
and applying my user password - but it doesn't work.

Anyhow I'm not sure how to become root in the GUI - I've been spoilt by
YAST, I suppose. How's it done in Gnome?

What I want to achieve in the end is:
- to be able to change the password for root to something I choose and
- to access my 'local' partition and finally
- to get it to rip to mp3
(the CPU's a VIA C3 1GHz Nehemiah but what ix86 is that?)

These items must seem so trivial to any accomplished Linux man but I'd
be very grateful for some guidance.

Thanks and best, Richard.
