Yes! I have a (getting rarer) first-gen DVD drive which doesn't do
the stupid region stuff in the BIOS. Because my Mac is now locked to
Region 1, I *have* to first rip DVDs in this drive just in order to
play them. It's also good for ignoring UOPs and just playing the film
I bought.
It's also good for ripping CDs (I don't have a CD player anywhere, so
need to rip to MP3 in order to play).
