Quite so. It's not hard to grep for weird errors and see if the errors
are cured, for instance. People at work consider me some sort of guru
for being able to answer questions about the behaviour of free software
in a few seconds: guys, there's nothing magical about grep -R!

(This is why I wish I had open CPU microcode. I *think* my recent
L2 cache problems were caused by Intel Pentium III erratum E35, but
is there any way to tell other than exhaustive tests after update? No,
because the microcode is closed, doubly encrypted and written in some
undocumented lower-than-CPU-instructions language.)
