[Gllug] Directories mounted over a network

I have mounted a Windows shared directory over a network to
'media/win'. I also created a link in my home directory called 'win'
('~/win'). I find that when I list (using 'ls -l') my home directory
and Linux has trouble communicating with the Windows machine, the list
operation can take sometime to complete. Is there anyway I can reduce
the timeout time, or to prevent Linux from trying to access the link
target unless I actually need to access its contents, other than
putting in the link in a subdirectory?
