[Gllug] 'net access from hotels in the USA

My wife's sister is proposing to cycle across the USA from coast to
coast (again!) next summer. The last time she did it she took a laptop
with her and e-mailed her dispatches with the aid of a modem and hotel
telephone lines.

She's been assured by a colleague that this won't be necessary this time
because "all American hotels have wireless LAN access". Does anyone
with experience of pootling about on the other side of the pond know
whether this is the case and how widespread it is? We're talking about
hotels dotted all the way from coast to coast - not just in the big
cities. She's not very technical, but I can set her machine up before
she leaves, provided she can be confident that the facility will be
there at the other end.

I'd propose to have her connect back here with IMAPS and SMTP, with a
fallback to Webmail if she can only get web access.

Views?

TIA,
John
