Personally I use ! to do the same thing. It runs the same function, but
it's easier to remember, as the tick mark is a ! sign :)

Gnus supports vast numbers of different types of mark, but tick (!) and
dormancy (?, `show this article if any of its children are shown') are
probably the most widely set by humans.

Articles are expired in exactly the same way as they are in all other
groups: i.e., you'll need to turn on auto-expiry, either globally
(perhaps not a good idea if your main mailbox is kept in Gnus as well)
or for that group with an (auto-expire . t) in the group's parameters
(`G p' in the groups list to edit them).
