[Gllug] debian install

Hi
I am trying to install debian on a spare machine,  using a previously downloaded
'install' cd-rom.
It appears to install reasonably well,  but when I try and apt-get (for example)
ftp   it downloads all the packages and then displays the error message:

THis installation will require temporariliy removing the essential package
e2fsprogs due to a conflicts/pre-depends loop.......
internal error could not early remove e2fsprogs

Any ideas as to what I am doing wrong?

Do I need to download a more uptodate install CD  or what  ??
