I have a Sony Vaio widescreen laptop, 1280x1000. Never had any luck 
changing the resolution, even on the built in lcd monitor.

The ati binary drivers also crash on this machine, so I have to use the 
slower fglrx.

One thing I've not tried on this which might work is a xinerama 
configuration. You can have two screens with differing resolutions. That 
might be your best bet.

I'd be interest to hear anything you discover.
