Uh...  I think you'd find, with a little research, that Google have
been legally compelled to do that since someone else was already using
the gmail name in the UK and got a bit pissed off (in a
taking-to-court sense) when Google tried to nick their name.  The
'other' gmail isn't a public webmail service, but some sort of
financial newsletter/notification service, but still, the name is the
same and the service was considered close enough for Google to drop
the gmail name in the UK.  The same applies in Germany, AFAIK.
