[Gllug] External hard disk under linux - unmount safely

I've added an external hard disk to one of my linux boxes, and it has
detected and automounted it perfectly. I can unmount it manually - but
if I want to unplug it while the linux machine is switched on, do I have
to tell the USB system something before I do so? Or will it
"just work" if I unplug it?

thanks,
jack
