[Gllug] just built my first squid proxy - but does it work?

How can I tell if the proxy I just made is working?
I thought I would be able to see files in the squid cache.
I have built it so that there is a bypass route out incase the 
proxy isn't working - so effectively I can't tell if the data is
bypassing the proxy or going through it.
