[Gllug] Runaway process - squirrelmail/sendmail/php?

After some difficulty (the Ubuntu default install doesn't work) I got
Squirrelmail installed on my server at home (I'm using it now) but in the
following 24 hours have been hit twice by some runaway process locking up
the server.
As the box sits headless in one corner of the living room, it's a pain
especially as logging in by ssh tends not to work and even when it does
the machine is highly unresponsive (with usage count running at about 20).
I haven't had time to investigate throughly, but simple use of top and a
scan through the logs has not revealed anything obvious other than the
sendmail daemon reporting it was not accepting connections.
How can I easily locate the misbehaving process and has anyone had a
similar issue with Squirrelmail/php (NB I used to have Fedora on the
server and Squirrelmail worked without any problems).
