M$ first became prominent when IBM could not be bothered to write a
(Unix) compatible operating system for the early Personal Computers. I
understand that M$ no longer has a large development team and already uses
some Open Source packages, Vista is reported to be a relatively minor
upgrade from XP, so perhaps M$ are considering joining the movement towards
compatible operating systems. It may even be cost-effective for M$ to just
purchase all companies with any claim to the name Unix, then readjust the
licence charges.
