You maximise your lifetime earnings by being self-employed when young,
then moving into employment. This is generally true for any occupation
in a capitalist economy (for reasons I won't go into now). It
has nothing to do with tax regimes.

However, the opportunity is not there in every occupation for those
with little experience to become self-employed. Programming is one
profession in which it is possible,
